To follow up my previous experiments (ie. jellyfish - not as tasty as you think, india - does actually exist), yesterday I ate a Russian Cheese Sandwich. The menu didn't say what it contained, but I was thinking, "how wrong can a sandwich go? Bread, cheese, things. Yum."

I am serious. It is vile beyond belief. I wish I'd thought to take a photo of this thing. For a start, there are three layers of white bread. Good start. One of the two available food-spaces here is filled with cheese. Not particularly great cheese, but still, thus far, not too awful. The remaining food-space, though, is full of this weird mix of chopped fruit - apple, pineapple, grape and maybe some others. I couldn't tell, because this fruit was drowned in a weird creamy, sugary, sauce of vileness. And then, the whole thing was drenched in virulent yellow and orange syrups, that they has used to write "R" and "S" on the top of the sandwich. It is served with tomato sauce.

I have never, ever, felt such relief that Soviet communism didn't work out.

Apart from that, I don't have much news. I have done a little work, including more of the dreaded transcribing (particularly fun when trying to type out an interview with someone who has a thick accent and a toothache). I also saw some friends, and got some delightful emails from family. Including my brother, who repeatedly warned me not to have a baby too soon - I think he is confused about what I am doing in India. It was so nice to hear from him, I've been missing him a lot.

I am also excited about getting back to Perth (again!) because I got a phonecall from my father last night and he told me that I now have a new batch of cousins in Perth. I like the thought of so much family in the place I live - I don't think that it's happened since I was about five. Can someone who knows about family stuff please tell me...this is my grandfather's sister's son, and his children - is that cousins something removed? or something? or just relatives? I am confused about such things.

In other people news, I got friendly emails from another bookcrossing-er in Bangalore. How nifty.

Also: when the hell is "early february"? I am irritated that the Dean's Postgraduate Award thingies aren't out yet. Actually I am kind of hoping that I don't get it, because then I can apply for a scholarship from ISTR to travel to their conference, and save applying for the Dean's award thingummy for later, for something where there are no other scholarships available. Argh. All this is a bit too confusing for me. And I haven't even started writing the paper yet!

That is all.

Where on earth did you get such a culinary adventure? Are you ever going to go back there? What were the other things on the menu? This confuses and worries me. Maybe Russia will take over the world and then we will all have to eat this.

It was at a fairly nice restaurant, actually, which apparently we're going back to. I think next time I'll have one of the many delicious non-Russian dishes that they offer.
