and, also, found myself entranced by a discussion of consociationalism in cyprus. actually, i find the whole electoral/constitutional engineering topic fascinating - to the point where i'm a little miffed that i didn't do more work on it.

still. enthusiasm about numerous things today feeds into me feeling generally better about the world. despite the fact that i 'slept in' ('til 7:30), i'm starting to pull up a bit. i had a good discussion with mr e and ms s, too, about future directions in which we may take our degrees, and i feel a little more optimistic about my current plan for life, such as it is. plus i'm going to capoeira tonight, which is overdue - i know it's only been about a week and a half since i last went, but that feels like a ridiculously long time. (i hope that i don't get rained on, cycling there).

books!
i'm getting more time to read now...which i shouldn't really be doing so much of, but it's quite the treat for me these days.

as well as the banana yoshimoto books, both of which i liked, i also just finished art and lies by jeanette winterson. i liked it more than the powerbook, but it still felt like it was missing something, for me. maybe it was just the mood that i was in when i read it but it didn't ever quite come together. (one day i will get better at talking about books.) i also read the wild shore by kim stanley robinson - ok, but still a bit too...generic. i'm sure [livejournal.com profile] boxer_the_horse will be horrified by me consigning yet another KSR book to the "ok...for it's genre" pile, but it didn't have the skill and imaginative breadth that the years of rice and salt or the mars trilogy had. in my opinion.

anyway, i'm reading shantaram, by gregory david roberts, now. the writing is a bit clumsy so far, but it seems a promising story at least. it's a bit heavy (physically), so it's going to be my at-home book for the next few days, and i'm reading waiting, by ha jin, while i'm out. i haven't read that many chinese writers, so i'm quite interested to see how this one goes for me.

hmm.

hopefully all this renewed time for and excitement about books will translate into a little more writing of my own.
