Hermanus is a nice place to do nothing very much. I've gone for a few long walks, spent some time with family, gone for a few drives around the coast, and even (*gasp*) done some uni work and put up a new post to my research blog.

The walks have been quite lovely... yesterday Lance and I went through a particularly lovely nature reserve. There were a few places where you have to walk across wood bridges or climb up rock with the aid of ropes - nothing too strenuous, but it does make things interesting. At the end of our walk was a huge waterfall, just a trickle now. There were orchid all over the face of the waterfall, and I got a hint of the excitement of orchid collecting. There was a stream running through the valley we walked through, and we stopped to swim at one of the pools on the way back. Of course, I retained my usual nervousness about water and only swam briefly - the tea-coloured water (iron leaching from the rocks?) had me quite worried that Things would eat me any second.

My plans for the next few days are more of the same. On Thursday I'm going to Durban, until Sunday morning. In retrospect, I think it might have been worth staying a little longer, but tickets are booked now so that's that. I'll be staying with a friend, Zoe, who's older and wiser than me and seems very aware of the security situation - I'm sure she'll keep me quite safe.

Glad to hear that you are doing some nothing and uni work on your holiday. Remember that it is not the quantity of the time but the quality of the time you spend with Zoe that is important. Love.

And now I have read your new research entry. Wow! I like your condensed writing & running analysis. Seeds are cool stuff! I will send you photos of the seeds (and possible resulting plants) that I brought home from WSF and the stadium once I have come around to plant them. Not really the right time of the year now, but in a couple of months or so ... Photos of seed & plants from overseas shouldn't threaten the vulnerable Australian endemic flora, right? ;-)

PS Sadly, one cannot (or at least I cannot or haven't found the way to) leave comments on your research blog, so you have to bear with this way.

I've worked out how to allow anonymous comments on my research blog now. Should be up and running.
