So much news I could almost pop
Jan. 17th, 2006 07:07 amLots of exciting things are happening here, but I doubt I'll manage to write them all down. I also have extreme doubts as to how exciting they'll be if you're not me, but in the interests of brutal honesty and cutting down my readership
First off, last night I managed to make a friend. I'd finished calling every number I could get hold of, and running all the errands I could think of, it was still only four. So I dropped around to see Raj (guy I mentioned who talked to me). He wasn't in, but after a couple of hours of sitting in my room painting and writing he turned up at the hotel, and we talked in the hotel for a while. He seems eager to help out mainly because he doesn't want me to get a bad impression of India, which is odd because he seems to spend a lot of time telling me that Australia is much better than India. He seems nice and friendly and non-threatening, and is married, so I think I will talk to him more. Of course I'm still bearing in mind that my judgement may be wrong and taking all precautions. His friends were waiting for him outside, so I went downstairs and met them and talked to them for a little while (all about ten metres from the hotel doorstep, so don't fret, if you are so inclined). One of his friends is mad about cricket, and loves Australia's cricket team.
In fact, I have a declaration to make: I am now open for cricket updates. Every second person who asks where I'm from responds by saying "Oh! Australia is very good at cricket!" Today the guy who came to clean my room shook my hand as if I was personally responsible for Australia's cricketing excellence. So, anyone who wishes to tell me exciting facts about cricket, please feel free.
In other sporting news, Raj's cricket loving friend goes to Tae Kwon Do classes near my hotel, so I might start going to those, especially since it seems like I'm going to be here for a while more.
My research is taking off, thankfully. I have an interview tomorrow morning with Suresh Heblikar, an environmental activist here, and about four or five more lined up with activists and academics.
I'm still trying to work out whether to go to Mysore. I've been in contact with one of the academics at Mysore University, who's passed on my email to someone else. I think it will depend on their response, and on when the WSF ends up being on.
In other news of academia: the day is drawing nearer to find out whether or not my paper was accepted for the ISTR conference, and whether or not I'll get one of the Dean's Postgraduate Awards. Both of them seem very competitive, so cross your fingers, sacrifice to your gods, or improve the statistically probability with science, according to personal preference. I want to be academically nifty!
Also, please do all those things for my mail. My attempt to post things today (which took about an hour and a half in total) has not given me huge hope for the safe arrival of my letters, and has caused especial concern for the letter I put in a postbox yesterday. If there is a god of mail among the Hindu pantheon, I sent my prayers!
Now, time to find some lunch!

* There are six balls in an over.

on 2006-01-18 06:25 am (UTC)The sub continent contains probably more cricket fans that the fans of any other sport in the world added up (maybe not soccer).
The following are things you might say:
*It seems like the Australian team is past its prime and the Ashes loss to England is evidence of this.
*We beat your asses last time we toured here, but admittedly it was a long time (like decades or so) since we last did that.
*Sachin Tendulkar is one of the world's best batsmen and plays for India.
*The Indian captain is (i'm pretty sure he still is) Sourav Ganguly.
*Murilitharan, the famous spinner with the suspect bowling action, comes from Sri Lanka and not India.
*Shane Warne is probably the best leg spinner in the history of the game but the way he manages to make such a fucking mess of his personal and romantic life is mystifying.
*Glenn McGrath is a genuinely funny looking man.

on 2006-01-18 09:19 am (UTC)I disputed to point with Shane Warne, because he is the only one who I can actually remember seeing, but was informed that he is the best bowler. People may or may not have looked at me like I'm a crazy woman.
Also: another odd point... it seems like most of the people here who know Australian cricket (so, approximately everyone) absolutely love the Australian cricket team. Yesterday I talked to someone who has 'ACB' - Australian Cricket Board - as a nickname in college.
