Your lj looks like a forrest.

Also, an iPod? Sky, sky, sky. After all your 'you drive a car' related taunts directed at me and you've just gone and indulged in one of the most ubiquitos pieces of capitalist excess available. Why is it that you NEED an mp3 player? :P

Fool! Are you even listening to my long and somewhat incomprehensible rants? I don't disapprove of cars because they are symbols of capitalist excess...I disapprove of them because:

1) Many of my friends who own them are often broke, and further cripple themselves spending money on a car when it just flat out doesn't make sense financially - most people I've talked have agreed that a 'mixed strategy' of bicycles/walking, public transport and taxis would be far cheaper,
2) Their use influences town planning and contributes to ugly, badly set out cities (which I don't think you can blame iPods for), with poor public transport systems,
3) Once someone has a car, they don't tend to question their use of it, or look at other options (like bicycling or buses) because now they seem too inconvenient.

(hmm. i bet you weren't expecting another rant in response to that throwaway comment)

Maybe I will do a you-style rant later on my opinions on life choices involving Things.

Or maybe I'll just shut the fuck up, and keep some friends...

Hahaha, It wasn't a throwaway comment! I meant it, but the poking out tongue was to denote the tone of not being all 'hey narc, this is not a place for your hate crimes!!!!' on yr ass.

I think if we fight this one out, I might win. The only forseeable challenge i can think of is that the production of CDs is environmentally problematic and seeing as mp3s are digital files they don't require packaging.

You will not win. While i think there are certainly problems inherent in iPods (elements of technology fetishism; music as an individual, rather than group, experience; personal music players shut one off from the world somewhat if you wear them all the time), i would argue that, as far as products go, they are relatively innocuous:
1) You can hack them to be powered by a hand-crank (which i will attempt to do, if at all possible), and
2) Electronic storage is far less wasteful, especially if you don't upgrade your electronic equipment every few years. (Also, if you decline to upgrade frequently to niftiest-possible-tech then you are also declining technology fetishism's hyper-consumerism.)

Also: i need some kind of recording device to use for interviews while i'm in India. An iPod seemed like the best option, because it can store so much information at once.

Really, Jarrad. I hope you're not seriously holding out the hope of winning this one. We both know how arguments between us go.

Submit!

Yay iPod! Is it a shuffle? I have one of those, because my dad won it and gave it to me! (I listen to it when I go walking! It is nifty but it makes it hard not to dance instead of walk!)

Just a regular old first generation. (It is being problematic to set up!)
