on 2005-11-02 06:13 am (UTC)Also, an iPod? Sky, sky, sky. After all your 'you drive a car' related taunts directed at me and you've just gone and indulged in one of the most ubiquitos pieces of capitalist excess available. Why is it that you NEED an mp3 player? :P

on 2005-11-03 01:44 am (UTC)1) Many of my friends who own them are often broke, and further cripple themselves spending money on a car when it just flat out doesn't make sense financially - most people I've talked have agreed that a 'mixed strategy' of bicycles/walking, public transport and taxis would be far cheaper,
2) Their use influences town planning and contributes to ugly, badly set out cities (which I don't think you can blame iPods for), with poor public transport systems,
3) Once someone has a car, they don't tend to question their use of it, or look at other options (like bicycling or buses) because now they seem too inconvenient.
(hmm. i bet you weren't expecting another rant in response to that throwaway comment)
Maybe I will do a you-style rant later on my opinions on life choices involving Things.
Or maybe I'll just shut the fuck up, and keep some friends...

on 2005-11-03 03:06 am (UTC)I think if we fight this one out, I might win. The only forseeable challenge i can think of is that the production of CDs is environmentally problematic and seeing as mp3s are digital files they don't require packaging.

on 2005-11-03 08:11 am (UTC)1) You can hack them to be powered by a hand-crank (which i will attempt to do, if at all possible), and
2) Electronic storage is far less wasteful, especially if you don't upgrade your electronic equipment every few years. (Also, if you decline to upgrade frequently to niftiest-possible-tech then you are also declining technology fetishism's hyper-consumerism.)
Also: i need some kind of recording device to use for interviews while i'm in India. An iPod seemed like the best option, because it can store so much information at once.
Really, Jarrad. I hope you're not seriously holding out the hope of winning this one. We both know how arguments between us go.
