One of the reasons that yesterday was Not Awesome was that J's ipod broke. It now just entirely fails to turn on. I was using it because my music player broke. This means: no podcasts for me! (*gasp* *shock* *horror*) I really don't want to buy a new one, because there is so much Electronic Stuff floating around the world from when everybody upgraded their Thing. So, what I am saying is:

a) does anyone have a music player of some sort sitting in a drawer that they're willing to sell/give me? Or
b) can anyone recommend a good place to buy second-hand music players, or alternatively a model that I should look for on Ebay or something?

Also: Ms S from work who has a SmallChild who has developed a deep ambivalence about computers. She watches the other children play, but is too scared to play herself because she's not allowed to touch computers. So Ms S would like to get her a play-computer. Does anyone have an old laptop lying around the place that they're willing to sacrifice?

Yesterday I went to the beach with Miss C and Klaus. It was windy, and I spent most of the time trying hard not to drown. My favourite part was when about forty teenagers ran past us into the waves, lemming-like, and starting swimming through the enormous waves towards Somewhere. I imagine by now that some of them have reached Antarctica. Miss C suggests that perhaps they curl up, pod-like, and float on to colonise new continents. I had the best sleep I've had in days last night - perhaps going to the beach should be a more regular feature?

Hmm, there is a 1 gig ipod shuffle sitting in my draw not getting all that much use, and I did have another usb stick mp3 player radio that Siobhan was using (but I am not sure if she actually is usng it), but it might be packed up with her stuff.

The stick had a tiny little lcd dispay, the shuffle is of course a "one big playlist" type thing, so, navigating to what you want ot listen ot can be a little tedious...

I'm sure that either of those would suit my purposes - I usually only have a few podcasts on, so navigating through isn't a hassle as long as it saves the place you were last at.

Don't go digging through packing or anything!

This is what you are in for
From Misc

it has a portable speaker stand charger rather than the normal one. And I don't have headphones for it, but I am guessing you do.

You an have it on "borrowed until such a time as I need it" conditions, which is pretty likely to be never. It has been untouched in my drawer for quite a while now, so it is better that it gets some use.

Lunch/hug this week sounds good, gonna have to see how the week turns out though.

I have an ancient lappy with a version of Ubuntu on it. There's something wrong with the battery, so it only worked when plugged into the mains last time I tried it. Would this be too crap?

No, that sounds exactly perfect.

I have turned it on and remembered the password and it still works! It looks hell beaten up though - although perhaps that will make SmallChild feel that it's less precious and forbidden-to-touch. :D

It's a Compaq Evo N800v from the dark ages of technology, running an old Hardy Heron install - I've downloaded some of the patches but the Update Manager is generating 404 errors for the rest and I figured you'll probably want to load a clean install onto it so I haven't chased down the source of the problem.

I'll give you a spare mouse with it so SmallChild can learn mouse skills, a Netgear wireless card (seems to be working fine on my network) and can throw in a CAT-5 cable too.

FYI, in case I forget to write it down to you I'm currently logging in as helenabella and have set the password to the same.

I know you're really busy at the moment, so let me know how your timing looks and we'll find a day to meet up that works for you.

Thanks! Hopefully we can work it in with some fruit-gathering, too.
