Aug. 18th, 2006 10:20 am* I've been in the mood for writing this morning. Unfortunately, what this means is: "I've written the beginning of yet another short story that will probably die a lingering death". I've enjoyed it, though.
* Today I'm going to a talk on 'Suboptimalities in the dynamics of capitalism when owners can burn resources'. Ah, game theory.
* Last night I dreamt that Lev told me off. Well, kind of. One of his friends had posted a rant about something, and he'd written that he was disappointed that certain people on his flist hadn't replied, listing some names. (Perhaps I am spending too much time on the internet?)
* I am almost entirely enchanted by wireless internet in Tibet. It makes me want to learn all kinds of nifty tech stuff and run away to set up cool hacks in developing world nations. (Of course, this is something that I almost always want to do.) With the $100 laptops coming out soon there should be a lot more cool stuff happening in this area, and a significant part of me is longing to be a part of making all that awesome. [Aside: the $100 laptop will almost certainly not be produced ethically or sustainably, I imagine. I hope I'm wrong. I wonder how much that impacts on its niftiness?]
* Last night I got together with five other young ladies from my department for drinks and Thai and talking about the world. And some talking about boys, too. It was surprisingly pleasant. It always amazes me anew when I realise that this kind of time-with-people is an option.
* This afternoon I and another young woman from my department will be "hosting" a discussion on civil society. I'm a little unsure about this, as our initial plan was to get together with a few people and have a chat over beer, but it's all got far more serious as various serious people got involved. I'm a bit nervous!
* Looks like I'm getting a Greek (and hence an EU) passport. Hip hip hurrah! Of course, this will probably take close to a year to sort out, but since I shan't need it for another couple of years yet I guess it's okay.
