Confusion: tax

So, I have a question about tax. I tried to call the tax helpline, but apparently it's too complicated for them. Which seems ridiculous. I figure the Internet probably knows the answer.

So, I made some money this year as me.
And I made some money this year as me-with-an-ABN.

But, there is no handy section on the individual tax return forms saying "money you made as you-with-an-ABN here please".

Do I need to fill out a different form for me-with-an-ABN?
(If not, where do I write me-with-an-ABN-income?)
Do I need to get some kind of pay summary for me-with-an-ABN?

I feel like this should be easier, given the pitiful amount I made in the last year and the fact that it only came from two sources. (Maybe I will ask my dad, also. I hear he is a grownup.)

I should know this but I'm not sure. The ATO absolutely should be able to answer that so the person you talked to is lazy or stupid or both. They also, I think, have a responsibility to answer this question for you. Maybe call back and keep asking for higher-ups til you get an answer.

Obviously an income tax accountant can answer this question for you, but yeah $$$. Still it might be an idea to file using an accountant this year?

IT IS! you need to ring them up about 3 or 4 times, listen to all the contradicting stuff the different operators will tell you and then make up your mind. at least that's how i do it. with ato, immigration and everything else.

There's a section in there about earnings as a sole-trader. That's where you want to put that income.

Gradually overcoming the "I do not know this, I am an adult, I should know how this works." thing and just asking (though you tried that!)

The other day I learnt how to give a tip while paying by credit card. I live and learn IMPORTANT LIFE SKILLS. :)

Maybe if I grab a 2009 Tax Pack today so that we can be looking at the same pages & paragraphs it might make it easier, and we can talk through any questions you have on IM/Skype?

Nope.

There's generally an 'other income' or 'business activities' question in the tax pack that leads you to putting in somewhere near your employment income.

Do I need to get some kind of pay summary for me-with-an-ABN?
Nope. Just try to keep some sort of written record so that if you ever get audited it's easy to verify.

Also, I wonder if eTax might make this simpler for you, but I know it doesn't run on Mac or Linux. (GRR)
