So, to cheer myself up I decided to arrange to get my typewriter ribbon replaced. At first I couldn't find anyone to do it, and looking for instructions on how to ink it myself I found this query: a request, on a PC users' bulletin board, for help replacing typewriter ribbons. Bless. (In the end I found a guy in Subiaco who'll do it. He seems likely to be an Interesting Old Man).
My search for a new laptop has been a trifle overwhelming: too much choice! And I'm not very good at differentiating between different laptops: since I don't need it to be good for gaming or especially spiffy, I suspect that my deciding criteria will end up being "whatever I can find that doesn't come with Windows". I am considering getting a netbook-ish thing, but I'm not sure if they'll manage. I've heard good things about the MSI Wind, but can I really:
a) type for several hours in a row,
b) open four or five documents + firefox + music, and
c) see properly on the screen,
on a netbook? I am undecided!
I also stumbled across the Asus Bamboo EcoBook, which is not at all what I'm looking for, but interesting nonetheless. Given my recent fretting about e-waste, terrible conditions for tech workers, etc etc, it was nice to see a laptop that has at least some ethical credentials - Treehugger liked that: "All of the plastic in it is labeled and recyclable; it is lined with cardboard; there are no paints, sprays or even electroplating used on its components. It looks like it is designed to be easily taken apart for self-service and easy upgrading of components, usually the downfall of notebooks."
