I've been doing some things, lately
Mar. 13th, 2007 03:19 pmLike learning how to type on a dvorak-layout keyboard. I do hope that it will be worth it, because for now it's incredibly tedious. Luckily I'm having a break at the moment, since I'm using the uni computer room....it's hard to describe the sheer bliss of typing at more than ten words per minute (or whatever excruciatingly painful speed two days of practice has got me to).
Perhaps it's the frustration of mindnumbingly slow typing that's getting to me, but I've been feeling rather exhausted and ratty for the last few days. A bit antisocial, but in an odd kind of way - I'm mostly really enjoying my time with people (or at least those I know and love), while simultaneously seeming to need far more time alone. I also spend most of my time around crowds grumbling away to myself about "people these days," getting progressively more irritated at fashion (why are dresses so short? why are t-shirts so stupid?), conversations I overhear, people smoking anywhere within 20m of me, &tc. Luckily so far I've managed to keep my grumbles sub-vocal, though I suspect I'm glaring rather more than is strictly speaking absolutely necessary.
Luckily there are plenty of things that are keeping me excited about the world, so my (hopefully short-lived) irritation at humankind and its various eccentricities isn't making my life too difficult. I've been spending a fair amount of time playing around with my computer, finding out what I can do with Ubuntu and trying to learn new things. Trying out the dvorak layout is part of that, although I have other reasons too (more on those in a later post, if I can be bothered).
As usual, cooking and gardening are perking me up. I'm still rather short on soil, but I've at least been doing some little things in the garden while I wait for it to cool down enough to plant things. I guess at some point in the future I'll start hauling soil around, but I'm still kind of averse to the idea of buying potting mix. We'll see where that goes, I guess. Cooking's been pleasant. I'm enjoying cooking for people, and luckily most of the stuff I've cooked lately has worked out (I'm particularly proud of an eggplant curry that I made the other night).
I do wonder, often, if perhaps some kind of cooking-and-gardening work would be better than all this academic stuff. But then I guess it's not either/or, right? And I am enjoying my reading, still...my thesis is interesting more lately than it has in ages, and the books I'm reading (one by Peter Singer and one by Joel Kovel, at the moment) are giving me some things to think about.
That's all.
PS. also, I still like bicycles. Hurrah!
