today's theme: food

So anyway. Kale and I watched The future of food today, and it was....frightening. Looking at the genetic engineering issue, but more from a developed world (and particularly US-centric) perspective. Yet another demonstration that today's food production systems are a horrifyingly bad idea. Also interesting for the way it ties into Castells' &tc arguments about today being an "information age". Questions about patenting of life, and being able to own rights to living things...even living things that have been contaminated, and are damaged by being cros-pollinated. More things to think about.
Including how to eat differently, or at least a little differently.
I was saying goodbye to Jamie tonight, so we hung around in Northbridge for a while and chatted and so on. We also had dinner at the African mesob place, and I was thoroughly delighted. It was a bit pricey by student standards(ended up being $30 each)... but ridiculously good. We had a black bean and prawn entree to share, which I think was one my favourite things ever, and then I had a (chicken & egg)) doro wat combination. Injera: yum! Other bits: also yum! And we had a keylime pie to share, which was delicious, and some coffee. It is my new favourite treat-dinner place, I think.
I also cycled to Leederville and to town and home, which was lovely. It made all the hassle of changing my tire this morning (a lot more trouble than it should have been, due to my ineptitude) quite worth it.
Also: for those of you who can't make it Tuesday, don't fret. I shall be in the country and everything for at least another few months!
