Happiness

I'm still feeling a little overwhelmed by this year, but I'm really enjoying being home and Getting Things [...] Done.

Some things:
* Seeing people! I still haven't caught up with family, or lots of the lovely people I would like to see, but I have at least seen N and K and a variety of other initials. Yesterday I saw the Think Tank, which involved a lot of hanging out with Tiny People on the beach. Tiny People are adorable, but also kind of gross - sand is not a food group.
* Getting places on my own steam: on Sunday I cycled home from J's, and also to Subi markets and back. Yesterday I cycled to Cottesloe beach and back. I love my bicycle, and how independent it makes me feel.
* Cooking: I missed vegetables a lot while I was away. It felt good to get a whole heap from the markets on Sunday, and since then I've been cooking for people as much as possible. I made a stir-fry on Sunday night, and yesterday morning I made a big hippy rice salad to take to the beach. Last night I made some vegetarian cottage pie. I am so very excited about all of these things.
* I have been reading about baobabs, and vikings.
* Pottering around the garden: weeding and watering and sweeping and tending to my compost.
* J gave me his old ipod, which had stopped following instructions. I put rockbox on it, and now it is a pleasant way to listen to my podcasts. I've also been fiddling around with my XO, and am rather pleased that I can now listen to lastfm on it.

Ooh, I was thinking yesterday that since you have no income it would be a useful as well as a fun thing to go for a foraging expedition through Nedlands very soon. We can look for citrus and loquats and figs and work out the most frugal and long-lasting things we can do with them!

Ohh, that sounds good. Maybe I'll dredge up the research I did before on such things, too. I remember something about nettles...

I am glad you are back, Monkeyface. I hope we can catch up soon!

Me too! I am missing you and Miss Lisaface Zippertum. My week is looking a little busy already, partly because I have Family Catchups, but hopefully Thursday or Friday? Or Sunday?

We are very patient!

My ipod has also been temperamental over the last few months, and I was about to go look for a new one over the weekend (which I will probably do eventually, if not so soon), but since it's well out of warranty (by two years, if the one year ipod limited warranty is the one), then I may just go and try rockbox out. Yes, I think I will. On Ubuntu, no less!

Also, I am glad you got back safely despite the travel dramas! I have read your chapter and when I get a break from my research doom times will write some comments for you, but it all read well and I enjoyed it very much (which is more than I can say for some articles I've been reading recently)!

Thank you! I am glad that you are using Ubuntu, and Rockbox is definitely worth a try for misbehaving iPods. Also glad that you have joined us on lj!

Good luck with your researchy-doom - I'm sure that it will be productive.

There's a baobab that was moved to Kings Park, but I haven't stumbled across it. *search* *search* There's a likely spot, I shall have to go on an expedition!

An early 2005 iPod might be a supported model...? I can report than a $20-$30 Sansa c240 from DSE is Rockbox'ing quite nicely with an optional 8GB microSD card. (though my card is quite slow)

I heard about the baobab - I will have to stop off in King's Park for a while on my way to/from uni one day and find it. Good luck with the expedition!

'Twas a success!

The big 750-year old is at the Forrest car park, the Two Rivers Lookout, just off the big Fraser Avenue roundabout.

It seems alive and well, with new shoots! It has a number of younger friends nearby of a more huggable size.

Further up, in a section of gardens with other plants from the north-west, are three more:

Hurrah! Thank you, I shall check them out sometime soon!
