Music!

Well, the repositories are finally up for Open Office 3, so I installed it and the Zotero plugins this morning. But I'm guessing it might be more interesting if I post about what I did last night, rather than my deep ambivalence towards the use of referencing software.

So, anyway, I don't go see live music very often. I feel awkward, not knowing where to stand, and my body starts screaming at me after a while. Plus, I have never really got the hang of loving music with the intensity that seems to be required for live music. Nevertheless, the Mountain Goats are one of the bands that I love deeply, possibly because the stories in the songs and the poetry of the lyrics connect with me.

So, I am doing a band-love post, a la liz.

First, this song didn't get played, but it is stuck in my head after writing this intro:

I think that were only about three songs that they played where I just thought, "oh, that's rather good", instead of "Oh my! I am so very glad they played that one!" so I won't put up videos for everything I loved. But I wanted to put up this one, because it is the song I get stuck in my head when everything seems too hard and I have to remind myself that I will make it through this year:

I really liked all of John's stories and introductions to songs. For the last song, John invited everyone in the audience to sing along with his 'hateful little song', and I did, joyfully and loudly and out of tune:

It really was a good show. It was great to see them in full-band mode as well, despite the fact that John seems to not like any of the material on the band's best record 'We Shall All be Healed". Well, they played "pigs..."

I wish I was friends with John Darnielle. What a cool dude. We could even talk about metal.

OH OH, one last thing - John wrote a 33 1/3 book (a series where people write about iconic records) about Black Sabbath's record-whose-name-escapes-me-right-now and I think this is a thing that both of us should read.

I actually just read about the 33 1/3 book (in the Big Issue)...I am unsure about whether I should read it, but I will put in on my maybe list.

Seriously, Darnielle writes really really well (which you'll know if you've read his blog Last Plane to Jakarta [if you have {and if you haven't you should check it out}]) so I'd have every reason to expect the book would be great.
